Midjourney vs DALL-E 3 vs Ideogram: We Generated 100 Images With Each

The "best AI image generator" debates online are mostly useless. They compare outputs cherry-picked to make a point, use different prompts for each tool, and ignore the actual workflow of using these things day after day.
So we ran the same 100 prompts through Midjourney, DALL-E 3, and Ideogram. Portraits, landscapes, product mockups, architectural concepts, logos with text, abstract art. Here's what we found.
The Short Version (If You're in a Hurry)
- Midjourney wins on artistic quality and aesthetic range
- DALL-E 3 wins on prompt accuracy and following instructions
- Ideogram wins on text in images — and it's not particularly close
Now the longer version.
Midjourney: Still the One to Beat on Pure Aesthetics
Midjourney v6 produces images that don't look like AI made them, and that's still rare. The lighting is coherent. Skin textures look like skin. Fabric drapes correctly. When you ask for a moody editorial portrait, you get something that could pass for a fashion shoot — not a good-for-AI approximation of one.
The model's greatest strength is also its biggest weakness: it has strong aesthetic opinions. Ask for something clean and minimal and it'll add atmospheric haze. Ask for "simple white background" and it'll find a way to make it interesting. Experienced users learn to fight this with negative prompts. Beginners get frustrated.
The Discord-only interface remains a real barrier. There's no web app that feels native. You're generating in a shared server channel (or a DM bot), which is fine once you're used to it, but genuinely strange compared to every other tool on this list.
Best for: Editorial photography, artistic concepts, fashion and lifestyle imagery, anything where "beautiful" matters more than "exactly what I asked for."
Worst for: Precise layouts, text in images (still struggles), predictable outputs for brand guidelines.
DALL-E 3: The One That Actually Does What You Say
Here's what the Midjourney fans don't want to admit: DALL-E 3 follows prompts better than any other mainstream generator. When you say "a woman in a red coat standing in front of a blue door," DALL-E 3 gives you exactly that. Midjourney gives you something loosely red-adjacent in front of something blue-ish.
For product and commercial work — mockups, marketing visuals, technical diagrams — this matters enormously. You're not creating art. You're creating a specific thing that needs to match a brief.
DALL-E 3 is also integrated directly into ChatGPT, which makes the workflow faster than any standalone image tool. You can describe what you want conversationally, refine it in the same chat, and generate — all without switching apps.
The knock: DALL-E 3's style ceiling is lower. It produces competent, clean images that rarely look stunning. They look like good stock photos, which is exactly what a lot of commercial work needs — but not what you want for a campaign hero image.
Best for: Product mockups, marketing visuals, precise compositions, anything described in a creative brief.
Worst for: Artistic or editorial work where quality of execution matters above all.
Ideogram: The Undisputed Text-in-Images Champion
Before Ideogram existed, putting readable text inside AI-generated images was basically impossible. Midjourney would give you letters that almost looked like words. DALL-E would try harder and fail differently.
Ideogram solved this. Its text rendering is clean enough for actual use — not perfect, not always typographically sophisticated, but reliably readable. For social media graphics, YouTube thumbnails, presentation slides, and signage mockups, it's the only tool worth using.
It's also the most affordable. The free tier is genuinely usable (25 slow generations/day). Paid plans start at $8/month — less than both competitors.
Outside text rendering, Ideogram is solidly competitive but not a clear winner. Its image quality is good, prompt adherence is better than Midjourney's, and it's been improving fast. But the reason to choose it is almost always the text.
Best for: Social graphics, thumbnails, logo concepts, any image that needs readable text baked in.
Worst for: High-end photorealistic work, complex artistic concepts.
The Head-to-Head Breakdown
Artistic quality → Midjourney (not close). Prompt accuracy → DALL-E 3 (consistently more literal). Text in images → Ideogram (no contest). Photorealism → DALL-E 3 (more consistent). Workflow/UX → DALL-E 3 (ChatGPT integration is smooth). Free tier → Ideogram (most generous by far). Value for money → Ideogram ($8/month vs $10-30/month elsewhere).
What This Means for Your Workflow
Professionals using AI image generation aren't picking one tool — they're using all three for different jobs. Midjourney for hero imagery, DALL-E 3 for product mockups and precise briefs, Ideogram for anything with text.
If you're just starting out: begin with Ideogram's free tier. Lowest barrier, teaches you how to write good prompts. Add DALL-E 3 via ChatGPT if you're already paying for ChatGPT Plus. Midjourney is worth it only when you specifically need that aesthetic ceiling — and you'll know when you need it.
