Joplinapp

Joplin is a free, open-source note-taking and to-do list application that prioritizes privacy, portability, and user control over the typical cloud-dependent ecosystem that dominates the note-taking space. The platform allows users to store notes in their own cloud service (NextCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, or a local folder) rather than trusting a centralized company server, making it particularly appealing to privacy-conscious users, security researchers, and anyone uncomfortable with their notes being scanned by AI or used for corporate purposes. Joplin supports rich text formatting, markdown editing, code syntax highlighting, and embedded images, alongside a powerful search and tagging system for organization. The application works on desktop (Mac, Windows, Linux) and mobile (iOS and Android), with synchronization happening through your chosen cloud provider, giving users complete transparency and control over their data. The software stands in direct contrast to proprietary alternatives like Evernote, OneNote, or Notion, which lock notes into proprietary formats and cloud infrastructure. For developers, data privacy advocates, self-hosted infrastructure enthusiasts, and users who value long-term data portability, Joplin is an excellent choice because your notes remain in open, exportable formats and are never processed by Joplin's servers. The feature set is competent though less flashy than Notion or Evernote—there's no relational databases, no collaborative templates, no AI-powered features—but this simplicity is by design. Joplin thrives in a different ecosystem from commercial note-takers, focusing on core functionality while letting users build their own workflows around open standards. The active community of contributors and plugin developers adds depth to the platform for power users who want extensibility.
